What's Happening?
RM Sotheby's is set to auction a 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss, which is believed to be the only example of its kind fully federalized and road-registered for the U.S. market. This specific vehicle, finished in Fire Opal Red paint, is the last
Stirling Moss edition produced by the McLaren factory in Woking, England, and is one of only 75 ever built. The car has accumulated just 32.9 miles since its manufacture. Originally commissioned by the Royal Family of Kuwait, it features a matching red-leather interior with yellow stitching and special Alutex aluminum trim. Notably, it is also one of only two SLR Stirling Moss editions equipped with a stereo. The auction, which is a sealed bid event, will run from November 25 through December 2. The car was previously sold in October 2024 at a Bonhams auction for approximately $3.5 million after undergoing a $40,000 reconditioning.
Why It's Important?
This auction is significant for the U.S. supercar market, as the car's unique federalized status makes it legally drivable on American roads, a rare distinction for this model. According to Harvey Stanley, director of Private Sales for RM Sotheby's, the car's U.S. road legality, combined with its low mileage, unique color, and status as the last of its limited production run, significantly enhances its value. Stanley estimates its worth to be in excess of $6 million, citing the strong U.S. supercar market and comparing it to rivals like Ferrari's Monza SP2, which sells for around $6 million despite a much larger production run. The sale highlights the premium placed on exclusivity, provenance, and legal usability within the high-end automotive collector community in the United States.
What's Next?
The RM Sotheby's Sealed auction for the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss will conclude on December 2. While the results of sealed auctions are not publicly disclosed, the sale is expected to set a new benchmark for this model, particularly given its unique U.S. registration status. The outcome will likely influence future valuations of similar ultra-rare, high-performance vehicles in the American collector car market. The car's journey from its initial sale to the Royal Family of Kuwait, its reconditioning, and its subsequent federalization for the U.S. market underscores the complex and often secretive world of high-value automotive transactions.
Beyond the Headlines
The federalization process for this Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss highlights a significant barrier for international luxury car owners wishing to bring their vehicles to the U.S. market. The complex and costly procedure, which this car has already undergone, adds a layer of desirability and value that goes beyond the vehicle's inherent rarity and performance. This situation also sheds light on the differing automotive regulations between countries and the specialized services required to navigate them. The car's history, including its ownership by the Royal Family of Kuwait and its unique features like the stereo, contribute to its narrative, making it not just a vehicle but a piece of automotive history with a compelling story for collectors.
