What's Happening?
A limited edition watch, the Salming 1,148, has been unveiled to honor the legacy of NHL icon Borje Salming. The watch, which commemorates the 1,148 NHL games Salming played, features design elements like
the CN Tower as a second hand and Salming's signature. The project was initiated by Salming and his friend Mats Kullenberg in 2018, and it was completed by Salming's children after his passing in 2022. Proceeds from the watch sales will benefit the NHL Alumni Association and related charities, continuing Salming's legacy of giving back to the hockey community.
Why It's Important?
The Salming watch serves as a tribute to Borje Salming's impact on the NHL and his contributions to the sport. By donating proceeds to charity, the initiative not only honors Salming's memory but also supports the hockey community, particularly former players in need. This project highlights the role of sports figures in philanthropy and the potential for memorabilia to serve charitable causes. It underscores the importance of legacy in sports and how it can be leveraged for positive social impact.
