What's Happening?
Aman, a luxury hotel brand, has announced plans for Amantaru, a new resort to be part of the Esencia private resort community on Puerto Rico’s southwest coast. Amantaru will be situated on a hillside above a secluded beachfront within the 2,000-acre Esencia community in Cabo
Rojo. The resort is designed to integrate with its natural surroundings, bordering a protected nature reserve and wildlife refuge. Architect Marwan Al-Sayed, known for his work on Amangiri in Utah, will design Amantaru with a contemporary architectural language. The property will feature an Aman Spa and Wellness Centre, a Beach Club, racquet sports courts, and various dining venues. Esencia will also include two championship golf courses, exclusive beach, equestrian, and field clubs, and a private airport for seamless access. Fully serviced three- to eight-bedroom branded residences will also be available.
Why It's Important?
The addition of Amantaru to Puerto Rico's luxury tourism landscape is significant for several reasons. For the U.S. luxury travel market, it provides another high-end destination within a U.S. territory, offering an alternative to international luxury resorts. This development can attract affluent travelers seeking exclusive experiences, boosting Puerto Rico's tourism revenue and creating high-value job opportunities. The project's focus on integrating with the natural environment and bordering a protected nature reserve also highlights a growing trend in sustainable luxury tourism, which can appeal to environmentally conscious travelers. Furthermore, the presence of a renowned brand like Aman, alongside previously announced Rosewood and Mandarin Oriental resorts within Esencia, elevates Puerto Rico's status as a premier luxury destination, potentially drawing further investment into the island's hospitality sector.
What's Next?
While no specific opening date has been set for Amantaru, the other resorts planned for Esencia have targeted 2028 or 2029. The development will proceed with the construction of the resort and residences, focusing on the unique architectural and environmental integration envisioned by MASASTUDIO. Marketing efforts will likely target high-net-worth individuals and luxury travel agencies. The success of Amantaru and the broader Esencia community will be crucial for Puerto Rico's strategy to position itself as a top-tier luxury travel destination. The private airport will play a key role in facilitating access for guests, and the overall development will be watched as a model for large-scale, integrated luxury resort communities in the Caribbean.
