A new study, published in the Journal of Pineal Research and reported by HealthDay News, indicates that bright indoor light therapy can significantly improve sleep cycles and activity levels in older adults. Researchers from the University of Surrey in the U.K.
recruited over 200 individuals aged 63 to 92 across three European cities. Participants' normal light exposure, sleep cycles, and physical activity were tracked for two weeks. Subsequently, about half of the participants received three months of indoor light therapy using a full-spectrum therapy lamp placed in their most frequently used room. They were instructed to turn on the lamp within an hour of waking and turn it off four hours before their normal sleep time. A two-week assessment after the intervention revealed that those with increased light exposure experienced enhanced daytime activity, improved wakefulness, and better sleep quality. Senior researcher Daan van der Veen emphasized that daytime light exposure is crucial for regulating circadian rhythms and sleeping patterns, especially for older adults in urban areas who may lack natural light exposure due to declining eyesight or mobility issues.
