What's Happening?
The U.S. is constructing its first new nuclear fuel factory in about 50 years in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The facility, operated by TRISO-X, a subsidiary of X-energy, will produce 700,000 uranium spheres annually, each containing over 18,000 TRISO particles.
These particles are designed to contain fission products even under extreme conditions. The plant aims to support advanced nuclear reactors, although the reactors it is intended to supply are not yet permitted. The project has received an $11 million grant from Tennessee's Nuclear Energy Supply Chain Investment Fund, promising over 1,000 jobs in the region.
