What's Happening?
Disney Entertainment Television (DET) has revealed the participants for its 2026 DET Directing Program, introducing a new two-year format for the scripted cohort. This program aims to foster emerging creative talent by guaranteeing participants the opportunity
to direct on a Disney series, alongside professional mentorship, on-set shadowing, and access to Disney's creative executives. The 2026-2028 scripted directing cohort will include Kristen Buckels Cantrell (Shifting Gears), Nicole Dorsey (The Rookie: North), Winter Dunn (The Rookie), Melissa Fisher (Will Trent), Talia Light Rake (Scrubs), Eric Lin (Tracker), Tessa Slovis (High Potential), and Stephanie Turner (9-1-1). The unscripted cohort for 2026-2027, which has previously placed directors on shows like 'American Idol' and 'Project Runway', will feature Diana Horn, Nikki Lazaran, Asa Livingston, Roush Niaghi, Molly Smith, and Brittany Thompson. The new scripted format allows directors more time to immerse themselves in their assigned series, build relationships, and receive extensive mentorship.
Why It's Important?
This expansion of the DET Directing Program signifies a significant investment by Disney in nurturing diverse directorial talent within the U.S. television industry. By extending the scripted program to two years, Disney is providing a more comprehensive and immersive experience, which could lead to more robust and well-prepared directors entering the field. This initiative directly impacts the pipeline of creative professionals, potentially increasing diversity and fresh perspectives in television production. For aspiring directors, it offers a structured pathway into a highly competitive industry, reducing barriers to entry and providing invaluable hands-on experience. The program's success in placing alumni on prominent shows underscores its importance as a launchpad for careers, ultimately influencing the quality and variety of content available to U.S. audiences. The commitment to mentorship and direct series involvement sets a high standard for industry talent development programs.
What's Next?
The newly selected cohorts will commence their participation in the DET Directing Program, with the scripted directors embarking on a two-year journey. The first year for scripted participants will focus on professional development, networking, shadowing, and mentorship on their assigned shows. In their second year, these participants will direct their own episodes and continue with tailored learning and networking to advance their careers. The unscripted cohort will also begin their program, gaining experience on various Disney series. The program's ongoing success will likely be measured by the number of alumni who secure directing roles and contribute to future Disney productions. This initiative is expected to continue shaping the landscape of television directing by consistently introducing new talent to the industry.
Beyond the Headlines
The DET Directing Program's emphasis on long-term development and guaranteed directing opportunities addresses a critical need in the entertainment industry for structured career progression for emerging talent. This model could influence other major studios to adopt similar comprehensive programs, fostering a more inclusive and skilled directorial workforce across the U.S. The program's focus on building relationships and providing extensive on-set experience goes beyond mere training, aiming to integrate new directors deeply into the production ecosystem. This approach not only benefits the individual directors but also enriches the creative output of Disney, potentially leading to more innovative and diverse storytelling. The program's legacy, with notable alumni like Ryan Coogler and Regina King, highlights its role in shaping the future of American television and film.
