What's Happening?
Taylor Sheridan has reportedly completed the script for 'Sicario 3', a significant development for the long-anticipated sequel. This news comes after years of uncertainty regarding his involvement, despite his creation of the franchise and writing the first
two films. The update was casually mentioned in a Variety story about Sheridan's move to NBCUniversal. Previously, actors like Josh Brolin and producers Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill had expressed hope for Sheridan's return, but his busy schedule had made it a question mark. This confirmation clears up a major hurdle for the film's progression, as Sheridan had initially conceived 'Sicario' as a trilogy.
Why It's Important?
The completion of the 'Sicario 3' script by Taylor Sheridan is crucial for the franchise's future and holds significant implications for the entertainment industry. Sheridan's unique writing style and thematic depth were central to the critical and commercial success of the first two films. His return ensures continuity in the narrative and tone, which is vital for maintaining the integrity of the series. For fans, this means the third installment will likely align with the dark, morally complex world established in its predecessors. For the industry, it demonstrates the enduring value of original creators in franchise development, especially when their vision is integral to the property's identity. This development could also reignite interest in the 'Sicario' universe, potentially leading to further spin-offs or related projects.
What's Next?
With Taylor Sheridan's script now complete, the next steps for 'Sicario 3' will involve securing a director and finalizing the cast. While Denis Villeneuve, who directed the first film, has stated he will not return, he expressed interest in seeing Sheridan's work. Josh Brolin is expected to reprise his role as CIA operative Matt Graver, and Benicio del Toro's character, Alejandro, is central to the planned narrative, as the previous film explicitly set up his next chapter. Producers have also discussed the possibility of Emily Blunt returning. The focus will now shift to assembling the production team and moving towards pre-production, with Josh Brolin having previously indicated that production could begin 'soon'.
Beyond the Headlines
Taylor Sheridan's decision to return to 'Sicario 3' after establishing a vast television empire highlights a fascinating dynamic in Hollywood: the balance between creator loyalty to original projects and the demands of new, lucrative ventures. His initial reluctance, or at least the uncertainty surrounding his availability, underscored the challenge of retaining top-tier talent for sequels when their careers rapidly expand. This development also speaks to the power of a strong creative vision in driving a franchise, suggesting that for certain properties, the original writer's involvement is almost non-negotiable for critical and audience acceptance. It also reflects a broader industry trend where successful screenwriters gain significant leverage and influence over their creations, allowing them to revisit projects on their own terms, even years later.
