What's Happening?
The City of Edmond, in collaboration with Visit Edmond and community partners, is launching the 'Edmond Start Here…' local spending campaign on Tuesday, November 3. This citywide initiative aims to encourage both residents and visitors to increase their
shopping, dining, and overall engagement with local businesses and experiences within Edmond. The campaign's launch coincides with Edmond Day, marking 101 years since Oklahoma Governor Martin E. Trapp signed Edmond's city charter. Research indicates that a significant amount of spending, estimated at $19.6 million in annual sales tax revenue, is currently leaving Edmond for neighboring markets, particularly Oklahoma City, due to confusion over city limits. The 'Edmond Start Here…' campaign seeks to counteract this trend by fostering a stronger sense of community identity and encouraging economic activity within the city.
Why It's Important?
This campaign is crucial for Edmond's local economy and its residents. By retaining more sales tax revenue within the city, Edmond can fund essential public services, infrastructure improvements, and community programs, directly benefiting its approximately 100,000 residents and 6.6 million annual visitors. The initiative supports local businesses, which are vital for job creation and maintaining the unique character of the community. A stronger local economy also enhances the city's appeal for future investment and development. The campaign's focus on community engagement aims to strengthen social bonds and civic pride, making Edmond a more vibrant place to live, work, and visit. Addressing the 'leakage' of sales tax revenue is a direct effort to ensure that local spending translates into local benefits.
What's Next?
The 'Edmond Start Here…' campaign will implement a year-round storytelling strategy, utilizing an official 2027 city calendar and a dedicated campaign website, EdmondStartHere.com. Each month will highlight a different aspect of life in Edmond, covering themes such as wellness, festivals, outdoor recreation, community activities, and local traditions. The city calendar will be distributed at various locations, including the Luminance Kickoff at Mitch Park on November 20. The success of the campaign will be monitored through metrics such as visitor numbers, sales tax revenue, and event attendance, as well as its impact on community connection. Ongoing promotional efforts will encourage residents and visitors to explore and support local offerings throughout the year.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Edmond Start Here…' campaign reflects a broader trend in municipal economic development, where cities actively work to cultivate local loyalty and combat economic leakage. Beyond the immediate financial benefits, such initiatives foster a sense of collective ownership and pride among residents. It highlights the often-underestimated impact of individual consumer choices on local governance and quality of life. The campaign also subtly addresses the challenge of urban sprawl and blurred municipal boundaries, which can dilute local identity and economic cohesion. By creating a clear, welcoming message, Edmond aims to solidify its brand and encourage a more intentional engagement with its local offerings, potentially inspiring similar community-focused economic strategies in other growing cities.
