On August 22, the sale of regular gasoline blended with 10% ethanol, known as E10, commenced in Guatemala. The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) confirmed that gas stations have completed the necessary maintenance on their tanks, equipment, and pumps,
and assured the public of a consistent supply of the ethanol fuel. The distribution of E10 regular gasoline to gas stations began at midnight on Saturday, August 22, with the expectation that it will be widely available across all stations within approximately five days. The MEM and the government will be closely monitoring the implementation process. This rollout follows a technical operation phase for the supply chain, which ran from June 30 to August 21. The implementation for premium gasoline has been postponed. The blending of ethanol occurs at ports or hydrocarbon storage areas before being dispatched to distribution transport, ensuring the fuel arrives at gas stations already mixed. An estimated 500 tanker trucks from the Pacific region and 200 from the Atlantic region are expected to distribute the fuel daily.

This tax exemption translates to a Q0.46 reduction per gallon for the ethanol portion, potentially offering cost savings to consumers. Environmentally, the use of ethanol-blended fuel is often promoted as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. However, the long-term environmental impact depends on the source and production methods of the ethanol. The widespread adoption of E10 could also affect the automotive industry, as vehicle compatibility with ethanol blends is a consideration, though E10 is generally considered safe for most modern vehicles. The government's monitoring of this implementation will be crucial in addressing any unforeseen challenges or public concerns.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) and the Guatemalan government will continue to monitor the implementation of E10 regular gasoline. While widespread availability is anticipated within five days, some gas stations with lower traffic might take up to eight days to fully transition. The MEM has established protocols for verifying fuel quality, now including ethanol in these controls. For consumer complaints or inquiries, the MEM has provided contact information via email and phone, and the Directorate of Attention and Assistance to the Consumer (Diaco) will also handle complaints through its usual channels. In cases of potential vehicle damage, the MEM will investigate the quality of the E10 blend at the point of purchase, requiring consumers to provide purchase receipts. The MEM has also confirmed that it has sufficient inventory of ethanol, with 7.4 million gallons available as of August 18, and more being discharged. Despite several unconstitutional actions filed against the mandatory implementation of ethanol in gasoline, the MEM had not been notified of any judicial decisions as of August 21.
