A new roadmap developed by consultancies ERM and Systemiq, in collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Fertilizer Association, outlines a credible path for the global potash and phosphate fertilizer
industry to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The roadmap suggests that deep decarbonization is theoretically achievable by 2050, aligning with the Paris Agreement goals, while simultaneously maintaining global food security and supply stability. Without intervention, the sector's emissions are projected to increase by approximately 25% from 2024 levels, reaching an estimated 550 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year by 2050. The plan emphasizes a combination of production system shifts, regulatory updates, and infrastructure modernization. Key strategies include incremental measures like updating infrastructure with energy recovery systems and heat improvements, as well as transformational shifts such as reducing reliance on traditional sulfur supplies and adopting alternative chemical pathways.
