What's Happening?
Boise Entrepreneur Week (BEW) is set to return to downtown Boise from September 28 through October 2. This annual event, powered by the Capital City Development Corporation, will feature over 80 events, more than 100 speakers, and six keynote speakers.
A significant highlight of BEW is the allocation of over $100,000 in cash prizes for Idaho startups and students. The event, which began as Boise Startup Week in 2016, aims to foster community and innovation within the Treasure Valley. General admission to BEW is free to the public and activities will take place at Jack’s Urban Meeting Place (JUMP) on Myrtle Street. The program includes various pitch competitions, with the main pitch competition offering a $50,000 grand prize to one of six finalists selected from a record 43 applicants. Other prizes include the $5,000 Creating Abundance Award and the $5,000 Scoggin Impact Award. Additionally, there are specific competitions for veteran and military-connected founders, offering a $10,000 award, and for Idaho food and beverage makers, who will compete for $25,000, including a $20,000 grand prize and shelf space at Albertsons and Boise Co-op.
Why It's Important?
Boise Entrepreneur Week plays a crucial role in stimulating economic growth and innovation within Idaho, particularly in the Treasure Valley. By offering substantial cash prizes and a platform for networking and mentorship, BEW directly supports the development of new businesses and encourages entrepreneurial spirit among students. This initiative helps to cultivate a robust startup ecosystem, which can lead to job creation, increased investment in local industries, and the diversification of the regional economy. The event's focus on various sectors, including technology, food and beverage, and military-connected ventures, ensures a broad impact across different segments of the business community. The involvement of established figures like senior economists and CEOs as keynote speakers provides invaluable insights and inspiration, further strengthening the entrepreneurial landscape. Since its inception in 2016, BEW has awarded approximately $1.2 million in early-stage capital, demonstrating its significant contribution to nurturing Idaho's future business leaders and innovative companies.
What's Next?
The Boise Entrepreneur Week will proceed as scheduled from September 28 to October 2, with various events and pitch competitions culminating in the announcement of prize winners. Attendees can look forward to a new lineup of six keynote speakers, with two presentations each morning starting September 29. These speakers include Brad Stith, Robert Spendlove, Matt Price, Natan Barry, Brittany Giudici, Lisa Zimowsky, and Natalie Piccola. The BEW Main Pitch Competition, a key highlight, is scheduled for October 1 at 5:30 p.m., where six finalists will vie for the $50,000 grand prize. Following the event, the awarded capital is expected to fuel the growth of the winning startups and student ventures, potentially leading to new product development, market expansion, and job creation within Idaho. The ongoing success of BEW will likely continue to attract more participants and investors in future years, solidifying Boise's reputation as a hub for innovation.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate economic benefits, Boise Entrepreneur Week fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration that extends beyond the event itself. The emphasis on accessibility, with free general admission, ensures that a wide range of individuals, from seasoned entrepreneurs to aspiring students, can participate and benefit. This inclusive approach helps democratize access to entrepreneurial resources and opportunities, potentially leading to a more diverse and resilient business community. The event's ability to connect students with founders and investors, as highlighted by Brittany Giudici, is critical for talent retention and development within the region. By showcasing successful local entrepreneurs and providing a supportive environment, BEW helps to build confidence and demonstrate that a successful career in innovation is achievable within the Treasure Valley, thereby strengthening the local economy's long-term prospects and reducing brain drain.
