What's Happening?
Telemundo, owned by NBCUniversal, has announced a significant acquisition of exclusive U.S. Spanish-language broadcast rights for all UEFA men's club competitions, including the Champions League, starting from the 2027-28 season. This new deal will see
these competitions aired across Telemundo, Universo, Peacock, and Telemundo’s sports-focused FAST channel. The current rights are held by TelevisaUnivision, which sublicenses some games to DAZN, but this arrangement will end after the upcoming season. The agreement includes not only the Champions League but also the Europa League, Conference League, and Super Cup. This move follows Telemundo's recent success with the World Cup broadcasts and its acquisition of Bundesliga media rights, further solidifying its position in the Spanish-language sports broadcasting market.
Why It's Important?
This deal is significant as it positions Telemundo as a major player in the Spanish-language sports broadcasting market in the U.S., potentially increasing competition with Paramount, which holds the English-language rights for UEFA competitions. The alignment of the expiration dates for both English and Spanish-language rights could lead to a bundled offering in future negotiations, impacting how these rights are marketed and sold in the U.S. The inclusion of these matches on Peacock, a platform with a broader reach, could attract more English-speaking viewers who prefer Spanish-language broadcasts, thereby expanding Telemundo's audience base and influence in the sports broadcasting industry.
What's Next?
With the new rights deal set to begin in the 2027-28 season, Telemundo will likely focus on integrating these broadcasts into its existing sports programming and leveraging its platforms to maximize viewership. The potential bundling of English and Spanish-language rights in future negotiations could reshape the landscape of sports broadcasting rights in the U.S., influencing how networks compete for viewership and advertising revenue. Stakeholders such as Paramount and other broadcasters will need to strategize on how to maintain their market share in light of Telemundo's expanding influence.
