Governor Kay Ivey announced that Alabama has been awarded the 2026 Silver Shovel Award by Area Development, a business publication, in recognition of the state's significant achievements in economic development. The award highlights Alabama's success
in attracting major investments, creating jobs, and expanding industry opportunities. The state's record-breaking economic performance in 2025 was marked by substantial investments in various sectors, including defense, aerospace, and pharmaceuticals. Notable projects contributing to this success include the establishment of the U.S. Space Command's permanent headquarters in Huntsville, which is expected to bring over 1,300 defense-related jobs, and Eli Lilly's $6 billion pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, also in Huntsville, projected to create 450 jobs. The Alabama Department of Commerce reported $14.6 billion in new investments and 9,388 announced jobs across 234 projects in 2025.
