What's Happening?
Kith, the influential fashion and footwear brand, has released 'Kith: The Footwear Archive,' a comprehensive 444-page book published by Assouline. This publication documents over 1,800 collaborative footwear models from founder Ronnie Fieg's personal
archive, marking a 15-year retrospective of the brand's design journey. The book, which is the largest volume in Assouline’s Ultimate and Classics Collection to date, was released on September 30th, coinciding with Kith's 15th anniversary. It is structured in two halves: the first showcases 700 released pairs through photography by Tyler Mansour, while the second half chronologically indexes the full archive, including previously unreleased pairs and developmental prototypes from Fieg’s collection. Partnerships documented within the book span major brands such as Adidas, Asics, Clarks Originals, Moncler, New Balance, Nike, On, and Timberland. An exhibition in Brooklyn from September 25th to 27th displayed every footwear model featured in the book, allowing for early purchase of the Classic edition.
Why It's Important?
The release of 'Kith: The Footwear Archive' is significant for the U.S. fashion and footwear industries as it provides an unprecedented look into the creative process and evolution of one of the most influential brands in streetwear. By documenting 15 years of collaborations, including unreleased prototypes, the book offers valuable insights into how brand-retailer relationships have reshaped the sneaker industry and elevated design standards. This retrospective highlights Kith's impact on consumer trends and product development, demonstrating how a brand can build a lasting legacy through strategic partnerships and a long-game mentality. For aspiring designers, retailers, and industry professionals, the archive serves as a case study in brand building and the power of collaboration. It also underscores the growing cultural importance of sneakers as collectible items and design artifacts, further solidifying their place within the broader fashion landscape.
What's Next?
Following its release, 'Kith: The Footwear Archive' will be available at all Kith stores worldwide, Kith.com, and the Kith App. Assouline boutiques will begin carrying the Classic edition starting December 9th. A limited Ultimate Edition, consisting of 300 individually numbered copies signed by Ronnie Fieg and housed in a leather clamshell, also launched on September 30th exclusively at select Assouline boutiques. The public exhibition in Brooklyn, which concluded on September 27th, provided an early opportunity for enthusiasts to engage with the physical archive. The book's release is expected to further cement Kith's position as a leader in the fashion and footwear industry, potentially influencing future collaborations and design approaches across the sector. Ronnie Fieg has also expressed a long-term vision, indicating that current work is part of a continuous narrative, suggesting future archival projects.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond its immediate commercial impact, 'Kith: The Footwear Archive' delves into the deeper cultural and artistic dimensions of sneaker design. By showcasing developmental prototypes and unreleased models, the book offers a rare glimpse into the iterative and often unseen creative process behind successful product launches. This transparency demystifies the design journey, highlighting the decisions, revisions, and ideas that precede a final product. It also elevates sneaker design from mere consumer goods to a form of contemporary art, worthy of archival documentation and scholarly interest. The book's emphasis on the 'work behind the work' challenges the perception of fashion as solely about the finished product, instead emphasizing the intellectual and creative labor involved. This could inspire a broader appreciation for the craftsmanship and conceptual thinking within the footwear industry, fostering a more informed consumer base and potentially influencing academic discourse on fashion and design history.
