What's Happening?
Mercedes-Benz has introduced the 2027 models of its AMG GLS63 and GLE63 S SUVs, featuring a new 4.0-liter V-8 engine with twin turbochargers and a flat-plane crankshaft. This engine, known as the M177 Evo, delivers 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque.
The new models also include a hybrid component in the form of an integrated starter-generator, enhancing low-rpm response. The GLE63 S can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, while the GLS63 achieves this in 3.9 seconds. These SUVs have been updated with chassis enhancements and cosmetic changes, including an electronic locking rear differential and AMG Ride Control+ suspension. The vehicles are expected to arrive at dealerships this fall, with pricing anticipated to start above $130,000 for the GLE and $150,000 for the GLS.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the 2027 AMG GLS63 and GLE63 S models signifies Mercedes-Benz's commitment to maintaining its presence in the luxury SUV market, despite a broader industry shift towards electric vehicles. The new V-8 engine with a flat-plane crankshaft not only meets emissions goals but also enhances performance, appealing to consumers seeking high-performance luxury vehicles. This move could strengthen Mercedes-Benz's competitive position against other luxury automakers, potentially boosting sales and market share. Additionally, the hybrid component aligns with the industry's gradual transition towards more sustainable vehicle technologies, reflecting a balance between performance and environmental considerations.
What's Next?
As the 2027 AMG GLS63 and GLE63 S models reach dealerships, consumer reception will be crucial in determining their success. Mercedes-Benz may monitor sales closely to assess the demand for high-performance SUVs with traditional combustion engines in a market increasingly focused on electrification. The company might also continue to innovate in hybrid and electric technologies to align with future regulatory requirements and consumer preferences. Additionally, the pricing strategy for these models will be pivotal, as it could influence their competitiveness in the luxury SUV segment.
