The United States is set to resume live cattle imports from Mexico on August 24, ending a yearlong ban imposed due to concerns over the New World screwworm fly. The ban significantly impacted cattle and beef industries in both countries, leading to a livestock
shortage in the U.S. and financial losses for Mexican ranchers. The reopening will begin at the Douglas, Arizona, border crossing, which borders Agua Prieta in Mexico’s Sonora state. Initial shipments will be subject to new U.S. controls designed to prevent the spread of the flesh-eating parasite. These restrictions include daily limits on cattle, starting at 700 per day and gradually increasing to 1,300, as well as requirements for radio-frequency identification tags and screenings by electronic readers and trained dogs. U.S. Department of Agriculture officials will conduct inspections before cattle are allowed to cross. The screwworm fly, which burrows into wounds of warm-blooded animals, has already been detected in Texas and New Mexico, despite efforts to contain it.
