What's Happening?
Laguna Beach is hosting a free community workout program called 'Sandbag Saturdays' at Thousand Steps Beach. Founded by brothers Dante, a former Navy SEAL and fitness coach, and Joey Finiguerra, a triathlete, the program began in December 2023. Participants
are invited to show up without registration, grab heavy-duty polypropylene sacks provided by the organizers, and fill them with beach sand to create their own weighted sandbags. The workout involves military-style drills on the sand, in the water, and up the stairs and adjacent hill, with sandbags weighing anywhere from 5 to over 50 pounds. Exercises include duck walks, suitcase carries, bear crawls, and overhead holds. The program emphasizes inclusivity, allowing participants to move at their own pace, and has attracted a diverse group including firefighters, lifeguards, boxers, National Guard personnel, yoga teachers, and local families.
Why It's Important?
The 'Sandbag Saturdays' program offers a unique and accessible fitness opportunity for the Laguna Beach community and potentially serves as a model for other coastal cities in the U.S. By providing free, equipment-inclusive workouts in a natural environment, it removes common barriers to exercise such as gym membership costs and the need for specialized gear. The program's emphasis on community building and self-paced participation fosters a supportive atmosphere, which can significantly boost public health and well-being. For local businesses, particularly those in the health and wellness sector, this initiative could inspire collaborations or complementary services. Furthermore, the use of sandbags and natural terrain provides a functional and challenging workout that can improve overall strength, endurance, and resilience, benefiting a wide range of fitness levels and promoting a healthier lifestyle within the community.
What's Next?
Given its growing popularity and positive community reception, 'Sandbag Saturdays' is likely to continue as a weekly event in Laguna Beach. The founders, Dante and Joey Finiguerra, have expressed their desire to keep the program free and accessible, suggesting its long-term sustainability. Other communities or fitness groups might look to this initiative as inspiration for similar outdoor, community-focused workout programs, potentially leading to the replication of 'Sandbag Saturdays' in other U.S. locations. The program's success could also attract attention from local government or health organizations, potentially leading to partnerships or support to expand its reach and impact. The ongoing participation of diverse individuals indicates a strong potential for continued growth and community engagement.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond its immediate fitness benefits, 'Sandbag Saturdays' has cultivated a unique 'outdoor third place' for participants. In an increasingly digital and isolated society, such community-driven initiatives provide crucial spaces for social interaction, mutual encouragement, and a shared sense of accomplishment. The program's roots in the founders' personal history with Thousand Steps Beach also highlight the deep connection between physical activity, nature, and personal well-being. This initiative underscores the value of leveraging natural resources for public health and fostering a sense of belonging. It demonstrates how simple, accessible activities can create profound social and psychological benefits, extending beyond mere physical exercise to build stronger, more connected communities.
