What's Happening?
Sandbox, a consulting firm providing recruitment, capital raise assistance, and business operations support, has moved its headquarters from the Arts District to a larger space in Shockoe Slip, Richmond. The firm, co-founded by Jill Lemon and Liz Doerr,
has leased the ground floor of a historic building at 1401 E. Cary St., which was acquired by SNP Properties for $7 million. The move is part of Sandbox's growth strategy, as the firm has expanded to around two dozen employees. The new location offers opportunities for further expansion and is seen as a return to the firm's roots, as it previously operated in the nearby Shockoe Bottom area. The building, constructed in 1870, was previously occupied by a law firm and has been vacant for three years. SNP Properties plans to convert the upper floors into additional apartments, complementing the existing residential units in the adjacent buildings.
Why It's Important?
The relocation of Sandbox to a larger and historically significant building in Shockoe Slip underscores the firm's growth trajectory and commitment to expanding its services. This move not only provides Sandbox with the physical space needed to accommodate its growing team but also aligns with its strategic vision of growth through both organic means and acquisitions, as evidenced by its recent absorption of Juno Systems. For SNP Properties, the lease agreement with Sandbox represents a successful step in revitalizing the historic building and enhancing the area's commercial and residential appeal. The development of additional apartments in the building is likely to contribute to the local economy by attracting more residents and businesses to the area, potentially increasing property values and stimulating further investment in Shockoe Slip.
What's Next?
As Sandbox settles into its new headquarters, the firm is expected to continue its expansion efforts, both in terms of team size and service offerings. The strategic location in Shockoe Slip may facilitate new business opportunities and partnerships, given the area's historical significance and ongoing development. SNP Properties will proceed with its plans to convert the upper floors of the building into residential apartments, which could attract more professionals and businesses to the area. This development may lead to increased economic activity and further revitalization of Shockoe Slip, potentially making it a more vibrant and attractive destination for both residents and businesses.
