What's Happening?
Gujarat has successfully attracted investments totaling approximately Rs 1.24 lakh crore across six semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). These projects are expected to generate more than 50,000 direct and indirect employment
opportunities. The state has positioned itself as India's leading semiconductor hub by being the first to introduce a dedicated semiconductor policy. The approved projects include major companies such as Tata Electronics, Micron Technology, and CG Power & Industrial Solutions. Micron Technology and Kaynes Semicon have already established operational Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities in Sanand GIDC. The investments aim to bolster India's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and reduce reliance on imports, aligning with the 'Make in India' initiative.
Why It's Important?
The significant investment in Gujarat's semiconductor sector is a crucial step towards enhancing India's self-reliance in technology manufacturing. By developing a robust semiconductor ecosystem, India can reduce its dependency on foreign imports, which is vital for national security and economic stability. The creation of over 50,000 jobs will have a substantial impact on the local economy, providing employment opportunities and fostering skill development. Additionally, the establishment of a semiconductor hub in Gujarat could attract further investments from global tech companies, positioning India as a competitive player in the global semiconductor market.
What's Next?
With the Union Finance Ministry's recent approval of an outlay of Rs 1.25 lakh crore for ISM 2.0, the initiative is expected to receive final approval from the Union Cabinet soon. This will further enhance India's semiconductor capabilities and accelerate growth in the sector. The ongoing development of supporting industries and infrastructure in Gujarat will continue to strengthen the state's position as a semiconductor hub. As more global and domestic companies establish operations in the region, Gujarat is poised to become a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
