What's Happening?
Effective October 1, 2026, the American Express Business Gold Card has added UPS as an eligible merchant for its $240 Flexible Business Credit. This change follows FedEx's removal from the list of eligible merchants on the same date. The credit allows
cardholders to earn up to $20 in statement credits monthly, totaling up to $240 annually, on eligible U.S. purchases. Enrollment is required to activate this benefit. The credit can be utilized across three merchant types: Grubhub, U.S. office supply stores, and now shipments made directly on UPS.com. This ensures that the shipping category remains a core component of the card's benefits for businesses. The structure of the benefit, including the $20 monthly cap across all eligible merchants, remains unchanged.
Why It's Important?
This update is significant for U.S. businesses that rely on shipping services, particularly those that were previously utilizing FedEx for their Amex Business Gold Card credits. The seamless transition from FedEx to UPS maintains the value proposition of the card's flexible business credit, preventing a potential reduction in benefits for cardholders. Shipping and logistics are identified as major recurring costs for 70% of businesses, according to an Amex survey, underscoring the importance of this category. By replacing one major carrier with another, American Express ensures that cardholders can continue to offset a portion of their shipping expenses, which is crucial for operational efficiency and cost management for small to medium-sized businesses across the U.S. This move also highlights American Express's commitment to adapting its offerings to meet the evolving needs of its business clientele.
What's Next?
Cardholders who previously used FedEx for their monthly credits will need to adjust their shipping practices to utilize UPS.com to continue earning the statement credits. Enrollment for the benefit is mandatory, and cardholders should ensure they have completed this step. The statement credits may take up to eight weeks to post, and purchases must process within the same calendar month to count towards that month's credit. Businesses should be aware of the specific terms for UPS eligibility, which include small parcel shipments paid directly on UPS.com, excluding purchases made at The UPS Store, UPS Access Point locations, UPS My Choice, Parcel Pro, UPS Air Cargo, or UPS Supply Chain Solutions services, as well as third-party resellers. American Express will likely continue to monitor merchant partnerships to ensure the relevance and value of its business card benefits.
Beyond the Headlines
The strategic decision by American Express to replace FedEx with UPS reflects a broader trend in the financial services industry where credit card companies continuously refine their rewards programs to align with cardholder spending patterns and market dynamics. This change could influence business decisions regarding shipping providers, potentially leading more Amex Business Gold cardholders to favor UPS for their logistics needs. It also underscores the competitive landscape among shipping carriers vying for partnerships with major financial institutions. For American Express, maintaining a robust and relevant suite of benefits is key to retaining and attracting business customers, especially in a competitive credit card market. The emphasis on core business expenses like shipping demonstrates a practical approach to providing tangible value to cardholders beyond just points accumulation.
