What's Happening?
STX Entertainment produced the 2019 film 'Hustlers,' which was based on Jessica Pressler's December 2015 New York Magazine feature titled 'The Hustlers at Scores.' The article detailed the story of former strip club employees who allegedly drugged and
overcharged their Wall Street clients. The film, directed by Lorene Scafaria, starred Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Julia Stiles, Cardi B, and Lizzo. 'Hustlers' achieved significant box office success, opening to $33.2 million from 3,250 theaters and ultimately grossing over $150 million worldwide against a production budget of approximately $20 million. This production highlights a growing trend in the entertainment industry where long-form magazine journalism is adapted into successful film and television projects.
Why It's Important?
The success of 'Hustlers' demonstrates the significant financial and cultural impact that adapting compelling journalistic narratives can have within the U.S. entertainment industry. For STX Entertainment, producing a film that garnered over $150 million globally from a $20 million budget signifies a highly profitable venture and a successful strategy in content acquisition and production. This model provides a valuable pipeline for studios and streamers, offering pre-vetted stories with established narrative arcs and public interest, reducing some of the inherent risks in film development. For journalists like Jessica Pressler, it creates new revenue streams through option fees and producer credits, elevating the value of in-depth reporting beyond its initial publication. This trend also influences how entertainment marketing and press strategies are developed, often leveraging the original source material's recognition.
What's Next?
The continued success of adaptations like 'Hustlers' suggests that STX Entertainment and other production companies will likely continue to seek out and option compelling long-form journalism for film and television. This trend is expected to further solidify the 'magazine-to-streaming pipeline,' where studios actively look for character-driven features with strong narrative potential. Journalists and media outlets may increasingly focus on developing stories with cinematic appeal, understanding the potential for broader adaptation and financial gain. This could lead to more collaborations between journalistic institutions and Hollywood, potentially influencing the types of stories that receive significant investment and exposure in both media sectors.
Beyond the Headlines
The phenomenon of adapting magazine features into major films like 'Hustlers' reflects a deeper shift in content creation and consumption within the U.S. entertainment landscape. It underscores the enduring power of well-researched, character-driven storytelling, regardless of its initial medium. This trend also raises questions about the evolving relationship between journalism and entertainment, blurring the lines between factual reporting and dramatic interpretation. While it offers financial opportunities for journalists and studios, it also places a greater emphasis on the narrative and dramatic elements of real-life stories, potentially influencing how these stories are framed and consumed by the public. The success of such adaptations highlights a cultural appetite for true stories brought to life on screen, often with a focus on complex social dynamics and human experiences.
