What's Happening?
Sandbag Saturdays, a free community workout program, is gaining popularity at Thousand Steps Beach in South Laguna. Founded by brothers Dante and Joey Finiguerra, the sessions involve participants carrying sandbags weighing 5 to over 50 pounds while navigating
the beach's challenging terrain, including a 223-step staircase and a quarter-mile, 250-foot elevation gain up Ninth Avenue hill. The program, which began in December 2023 as 'Water Jug Saturday,' evolved to use sandbags for their ease of handling. Dante Finiguerra, a former Navy SEAL, designs the military-inspired drills, which include exercises like duck walks, suitcase carries, bear crawls, and overhead holds. Despite the rigorous nature of the workouts, the atmosphere is described as inclusive and supportive, with participants encouraged to go at their own pace. Regular attendees include firefighters, lifeguards, professional boxers, National Guard personnel, and yoga teachers, alongside families.
Why It's Important?
The Sandbag Saturdays program highlights a growing trend in community-based fitness initiatives that prioritize accessibility and social engagement. By offering free, challenging workouts in a natural environment, it removes financial barriers often associated with fitness programs and fosters a strong sense of community among diverse participants. This model could inspire similar initiatives in other U.S. cities, promoting public health and well-being. The program's emphasis on functional strength and endurance, utilizing sandbags, aligns with expert recommendations for effective training, as noted by strength coaches like Cody Janko who advocate for sandbag training for building strength and size. The inclusive nature of the workouts, accommodating various fitness levels and ages, demonstrates a successful approach to making demanding physical activity approachable for a wider demographic, potentially reducing sedentary lifestyles and improving overall community health.
What's Next?
The founders, Dante and Joey Finiguerra, intend to continue offering Sandbag Saturdays for free every week, aiming to maintain its positive impact on participants' lives. The program's organic growth, driven by word-of-mouth and the inviting atmosphere, suggests continued expansion in participation. As the community aspect is a significant draw, future sessions are likely to see more curious beachgoers joining in, further solidifying its role as a weekend ritual for many. The success of this free, outdoor, and community-driven fitness model could lead to its replication in other coastal or public spaces, potentially influencing local recreation departments or fitness enthusiasts to establish similar programs that leverage natural environments and foster social connections through exercise.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate physical benefits, Sandbag Saturdays offers a unique blend of physical challenge and community building, transforming a demanding workout into a social ritual. The program's origins, rooted in the Finiguerra brothers' personal history with Thousand Steps Beach, underscore the emotional and cultural significance of local landmarks in fostering community engagement. The use of sandbags, an unconventional fitness tool, symbolizes a return to more primal, functional training methods, contrasting with the often-commercialized fitness industry. This initiative also subtly challenges perceptions of fitness, demonstrating that effective and engaging workouts don't require expensive equipment or exclusive memberships. It fosters resilience and camaraderie, creating a 'third place' where individuals can connect, push their limits, and find a sense of belonging outside of work and home, contributing to mental well-being alongside physical health.
