Governor Brian Kemp announced that Blue Bird Corporation, a prominent manufacturer of school buses, is expanding its operations in Peach County, Georgia. The company plans to invest an estimated $300 million to establish a new manufacturing facility in Fort
Valley. This expansion is projected to create 375 new jobs over the next three years. Blue Bird will convert a former diesel-powered motorhome manufacturing site into a 1-million-square-foot facility dedicated to producing Type C school buses, including models powered by diesel, gasoline, propane, and electricity. Construction for the new facility is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2027. Blue Bird, which has been based in Georgia for nearly a century, currently employs over 1,900 individuals in the state. The company's President and CEO, John Wyskiel, emphasized that this investment reinforces Blue Bird's commitment to the community and its mission to build safe and dependable buses.
Why It's Important?
This significant investment by Blue Bird Corporation underscores Georgia's continued appeal as a hub for manufacturing and economic development. The creation of 375 new jobs will provide substantial economic benefits to Fort Valley and Peach County, offering employment opportunities in manufacturing, operations, and technical roles. This expansion also highlights the adaptability of established companies within Georgia's pro-business environment, as Blue Bird diversifies its production to include various powertrain options, aligning with evolving market demands for more sustainable transportation solutions. For the state, it reinforces its reputation for fostering long-term business success and attracting substantial capital investment, particularly in rural areas. The project also demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between state and local economic development entities, such as the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Development Authority of Peach County, in securing and supporting major industrial projects.

Beyond the Headlines
Blue Bird's investment in a new manufacturing facility in Fort Valley signifies more than just job creation; it represents a strategic move towards the future of transportation and sustainable manufacturing. By converting an existing site and focusing on diverse powertrain options, including electric buses, Blue Bird is positioning itself at the forefront of the evolving automotive industry. This commitment to innovation and adaptability could serve as a model for other long-standing manufacturers in the U.S. The expansion also has broader implications for rural economic development, demonstrating how established companies can continue to invest and thrive in non-urban areas, providing stability and growth to local communities. Furthermore, the emphasis on producing electric school buses aligns with national efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner energy, contributing to environmental sustainability goals while also modernizing school transportation fleets across the country.
