What's Happening?
Los Angeles-based athleisure brand Set has opened its first Midwest flagship store in Chicago's West Loop. This new location, situated at 946 W. Randolph St., marks the brand's third brick-and-mortar store, following openings in Los Angeles in 2022 and New
York. The company, founded in 2018 by Lindsey Carter, has experienced significant growth, transitioning from a direct-to-consumer model to an omnichannel retail strategy. The West Loop store is designed to evoke a Midwest lake house aesthetic, featuring a 'lived-in living room' feel and incorporating elements that nod to Chicago's sports culture. It will also offer limited edition Chicago-themed merchandise, such as patches and 'World Champion' hoodies, exclusively available at this location. The opening celebration included a hat and patch bar, with the first 100 customers receiving custom tote bags and Garrett Popcorn.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Set into the Chicago market, particularly the thriving West Loop, signifies the continued growth and strategic evolution within the athleisure industry. This move reflects a broader trend of direct-to-consumer brands establishing physical retail footprints to enhance customer engagement and brand presence. The West Loop, including Fulton Market, has become a highly sought-after retail corridor, experiencing a 4.1% year-over-year increase in foot traffic, the highest among Chicago's top retail areas. This influx of businesses, including other fashion brands like Reformation and Rick Owens, indicates the area's economic vitality and its appeal to retailers targeting Gen Z and millennial consumers. Set's decision to offer exclusive local merchandise also highlights a strategy to connect with regional customer bases and foster a sense of community, which is crucial for brand loyalty in a competitive market.
What's Next?
Set's strategic expansion into key urban markets like Chicago suggests a continued focus on omnichannel growth and community engagement. The brand will likely monitor the performance of its West Loop store, particularly the reception of its Chicago-specific merchandise, to inform future expansion decisions. Other athleisure brands may observe Set's success in the West Loop as a case study for their own retail strategies, potentially leading to further investment in similar high-traffic, demographically attractive urban areas. The ongoing development of the West Loop as a retail hub is expected to attract more businesses, further solidifying its status as a significant commercial district in Chicago. This trend could lead to increased competition among retailers vying for prime locations and consumer attention in the area.
Beyond the Headlines
The opening of Set's Chicago store underscores the evolving landscape of retail, where digital-native brands are increasingly recognizing the value of physical spaces. This shift is not merely about sales but about creating immersive brand experiences and fostering deeper connections with consumers. The 'Midwest lake house' design and local merchandise reflect a nuanced understanding of regional identity and consumer preferences, moving beyond a one-size-fits-all retail approach. This localization strategy can build stronger brand affinity and differentiate Set in a crowded athleisure market. Furthermore, the success of the West Loop as a retail destination highlights broader urban development trends, where former industrial areas are being revitalized into vibrant commercial and cultural centers, attracting both businesses and residents. This transformation has significant implications for urban planning, real estate, and local economies.
