What's Happening?
Prices for used electric vehicles (EVs) have risen by 5.1% from January to June 2026, according to a Recurrent analysis. This trend continued into mid-July, with prices up 7% year-to-date. Historically, used EVs have depreciated rapidly, but current data
shows an appreciation in value, which is unusual in the automotive market. The average transaction price for 3-year-old EVs increased by 6% in the first half of 2026, reaching $33,303. This price growth is broad-based, affecting 21 of the 25 most-sold used EV models.
Why It's Important?
The rising prices of used EVs indicate a shift in consumer demand and market dynamics. This trend benefits current EV owners looking to sell, as they can expect higher resale values. However, it poses challenges for potential buyers, as increased prices may reduce affordability. The appreciation in used EV prices suggests a growing consumer preference for fuel-efficient vehicles, likely influenced by high gasoline prices and increased environmental awareness.
What's Next?
As more leased EVs return to the market, the supply of used EVs is expected to increase. However, strong consumer demand may continue to support price growth. The market will need to balance supply and demand dynamics, potentially influencing future pricing strategies and consumer purchasing decisions. Policymakers and industry leaders may also consider incentives to maintain affordability and encourage EV adoption.
