What's Happening?
Quad has introduced two new speakers in its Elegan Series, the Elegan 1 and Elegan 2, which are designed to deliver high-end audio performance at accessible prices. The Elegan Series is described as the 'spiritual successor' to Quad's popular L Series from
the early 2000s. The Elegan 1 is a two-way speaker featuring a 16.5cm Kevlar mid/bass driver and a 25mm fabric-dome tweeter, optimized for smaller rooms and near to mid-field listening. The Elegan 2 is a three-way design with dual 16.5cm bass drivers, a 12.5cm midrange driver, and the same tweeter, all utilizing woven Kevlar cones. Both models incorporate high-frequency waveguides to enhance sound dispersion and transition. The speakers are constructed with high-density cabinet walls and internal bracing to minimize resonance, with the Elegan 1 weighing 8.9kg and the Elegan 2 at 27.8kg per speaker. Available in deep matte black or walnut wood veneers, the Elegan 1 is priced at $995 per pair, while the Elegan 2 costs $1995 per pair.
Why It's Important?
The release of the Elegan Series by Quad represents a significant development in the audio equipment market, offering consumers high-quality sound technology at more affordable prices. By utilizing Kevlar, known for its strength and light weight, Quad aims to enhance audio clarity and reduce unwanted resonance, appealing to audiophiles and casual listeners alike. This move could potentially disrupt the market by setting new standards for performance and affordability, challenging competitors to innovate and offer similar value. The introduction of these speakers also reflects a broader trend in consumer electronics towards integrating advanced materials and technologies to improve user experience without significantly increasing costs.
What's Next?
As the Elegan Series enters the market, consumer and critical reception will likely influence Quad's future product development and pricing strategies. The company may expand the series or introduce additional models if the current offerings prove successful. Competitors in the audio equipment industry might respond by enhancing their own product lines to maintain market share. Additionally, the use of Kevlar and other advanced materials in consumer electronics could become more widespread, prompting further innovation in design and manufacturing processes.
