ESS Tech, a non-lithium battery storage company, has entered into a preliminary agreement with Juniper Energy to potentially deploy over 500 MWh of sodium-ion battery storage systems by 2032. This initiative marks a significant expansion of non-lithium storage solutions
in the U.S. The agreement outlines a framework for multiple energy storage projects, with the first being a 10 MW / 80 MWh system in California, expected to commence operations in 2027. Sodium-ion batteries, which use more abundant materials than lithium-ion, are seen as a way to mitigate supply chain constraints associated with critical battery minerals.
