What's Happening?
Ten concerts from the current Hollywood Bowl season, featuring the Los Angeles Philharmonic, are scheduled for broadcast on Classical California’s SoCal Saturday Night series. This weekly program, which spotlights local concerts, will begin airing on Saturday,
August 22, 2026, at 7 p.m. This marks the 19th consecutive year of collaboration between the LA Phil and Southern California’s listener-sponsored classical music radio station. The broadcast series aims to provide hundreds of thousands of Classical California listeners across the region with the opportunity to experience Hollywood Bowl performances. The programs, hosted and produced by Classical California’s Brian Lauritzen, will air weekly on Saturdays from August 22 through October 24 and will also be available for on-demand streaming on Classical California's website for two weeks following each broadcast. The series is made possible through the endowed LA Phil Broadcast Program Fund, supported by the Lenore S. and Bernard A. Greenberg Fund.
Why It's Important?
This broadcast series is significant for several reasons, primarily in expanding access to high-quality classical music performances. By making Hollywood Bowl concerts available on radio and online, the Los Angeles Philharmonic reaches a much broader audience beyond those who can attend live events. This initiative democratizes access to cultural experiences, allowing individuals from diverse backgrounds and locations within Southern California to engage with classical music. For the LA Phil, it enhances its public outreach and reinforces its role as a cultural institution. For Classical California, it strengthens its programming and listener engagement, fulfilling its mission as a listener-sponsored station. The long-standing partnership also highlights a successful model for collaboration between arts organizations and media outlets, ensuring the continued dissemination of cultural content.
What's Next?
The broadcast series will commence on August 22, 2026, and continue weekly until October 24, 2026. Listeners can tune in to Classical California’s SoCal Saturday Night series at 7 p.m. each Saturday or access the concerts on-demand via the station's website for two weeks after their initial broadcast. The success of this year's series will likely inform future collaborations between the LA Phil and Classical California, potentially leading to continued or expanded broadcast initiatives. The ongoing support from the Lenore S. and Bernard A. Greenberg Fund through the LA Phil Broadcast Program Fund suggests a sustained commitment to this form of public engagement, ensuring that classical music remains accessible to a wide audience in Southern California.
Beyond the Headlines
The enduring popularity of classical music broadcasts, even in an era dominated by digital media, speaks to the unique appeal and cultural value of this art form. This initiative not only preserves but also actively promotes classical music, introducing it to new generations of listeners who might not otherwise encounter it. It also underscores the importance of public and listener-supported media in providing diverse cultural content that commercial outlets might overlook. Furthermore, the partnership between a major orchestra and a classical radio station exemplifies how traditional institutions can adapt and thrive by leveraging technology to reach wider audiences, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts within the community and beyond.
