What's Happening?
Alushibe Holding Group, a diversified group headquartered in Benghazi, Libya, has announced plans to bring 12 international food and beverage (F&B) brands to Libya by 2028. This initiative, led by its Retail & Destinations division, will commence with
an exclusive master franchise agreement with MADO, a Turkish ice-cream and patisserie house established in 1850. The agreement, signed on October 13, 2026, by Ahmed Gadalla, Founder and Chairman of Alushibe Holding Group, and Mehmet Sait Kanbur, Chairman of MADO, grants Alushibe exclusive rights to develop and operate MADO in Libya. Alushibe plans to invest US$7 million in the first phase, which includes opening seven MADO cafés and creating 350 jobs, starting in Benghazi before expanding to Tripoli and other major cities. The first MADO flagship store, over 1,000 sq m, is set to open in Al-Hawari, Benghazi, in Q1 2027, with a second location anchoring District Mall, Libya's largest open-air mall, opening in 2028.
Why It's Important?
This significant investment by Alushibe Holding Group signals a growing confidence in Libya's economic recovery and potential for market expansion, despite the country's ongoing political divisions. The introduction of 12 international F&B brands will not only diversify consumer options but also stimulate job creation, with 350 jobs in the first phase alone, and contribute to the development of the retail and hospitality sectors. This move highlights the increasing economic ties between Libya and Turkey, with Turkish brands playing a key role in this expansion. For U.S. businesses and investors, this development indicates emerging opportunities in the Libyan market, particularly in consumer goods and retail, as the country gradually rebuilds its infrastructure and economy. It also suggests a potential for increased competition in the F&B sector as more international brands enter the market.
What's Next?
The immediate next steps involve the opening of the first MADO flagship store in Benghazi in Q1 2027, followed by further expansion across Libya. Alushibe Holding Group will focus on training Libyan teams to meet international standards, which will contribute to local skill development. The success of this initial phase will likely influence the pace and scale of introducing the remaining 11 international F&B brands. This development could also encourage other international companies to explore investment opportunities in Libya, particularly in sectors related to consumer services and retail. The ongoing political stability and security situation in Libya will be crucial factors in the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of these business ventures.
Beyond the Headlines
The entry of major international F&B brands into Libya, particularly through a significant Turkish partnership, reflects a broader trend of economic normalization and reconstruction efforts in post-conflict regions. This initiative goes beyond mere commercial expansion; it represents a cultural and social integration, bringing global consumer experiences to the Libyan population. The emphasis on local job creation and training also suggests a commitment to empowering the local workforce and fostering economic self-sufficiency. However, the success of such ventures is intrinsically linked to the country's political stability and security. The ability of businesses to operate effectively and attract consumers will serve as a barometer for Libya's overall recovery and its reintegration into the global economy, offering a glimpse into the potential for economic growth amidst complex geopolitical challenges.
