What's Happening?
Baker McKenzie has increased the salaries of newly qualified (NQ) solicitors in London to £150,000, aligning with the pay levels of Magic Circle firms such as A&O Shearman, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters, and Slaughter and May. This 3.4% salary
increase took effect at the beginning of July. The move follows a similar increase by Silver Circle firm Macfarlanes, which also raised its NQ salary to £150,000. Baker McKenzie's decision places it ahead of firms like Ashurst Perkins Coie and Norton Rose Fulbright, which continue to pay £140,000. However, it still trails behind the highest-paying US firms in London, with Quinn Emanuel offering £189,000 to NQs.
Why It's Important?
The salary increase by Baker McKenzie reflects the competitive nature of the legal industry in London, particularly among elite firms. By matching the Magic Circle firms, Baker McKenzie aims to attract and retain top legal talent in a market where salary is a significant factor for newly qualified solicitors. This move could potentially influence other firms to reassess their compensation packages to remain competitive. Additionally, it highlights the ongoing trend of rising salaries in the legal sector, which could have broader implications for the cost structures and profitability of law firms operating in the UK.
