A new study involving nearly 4,900 U.S. adults has found a correlation between consuming more plant-based foods and slower biological aging. The research, which analyzed data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study and the National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey, examined the dietary habits of ordinary Americans and their impact on biological age, as measured by DNA methylation patterns. Specifically, the study found that participants with higher scores on plant-based diet indices showed lower GrimAge version 2 readings, an estimate of biological age tuned towards mortality and illness risk. While the study did not require participants to be fully vegan, it indicated that a shift towards whole plant foods, even without entirely eliminating animal products, was associated with this slower aging biomarker. However, not all plant-based foods contributed equally, with healthy plant foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables showing benefits, while refined grains, potatoes, fruit juice, sweets, and sugar-sweetened drinks did not.
