Menlo Research has introduced the Asimov 1, a 1.2-meter, 35-kilogram open-source bipedal humanoid robot kit priced at $20,000. This kit is unique in the market as it is sold unassembled, allowing users to build the robot themselves. The Asimov 1 is designed
for educational and research purposes, offering full access to its hardware and software, which are open-sourced under CERN-OHL-S-2.0 and GPL-2.0 licenses, respectively. The robot features 25 actuated degrees of freedom and is constructed using CNC-machined aluminum and Multi Jet Fusion nylon. It is equipped with a Raspberry Pi 5 and a Radxa CM5 for networking and motor control. The kit does not include hands, and Menlo does not provide specifications for battery runtime or walking speed. The Asimov 1 is targeted at university labs, research facilities, and engineers interested in modifying and understanding humanoid robotics.
