What's Happening?
Revel, a company founded in 2024 that develops software for controlling mission-critical hardware in sectors such as aerospace, energy, robotics, and advanced manufacturing, is hiring its first in-house HR Business Partner. This strategic move aims to transition
the company's human resources operations from an outsourced firm to an internal function. The new HR Business Partner will be responsible for building Revel's People function from the ground up, including advising leaders and employees, creating core HR programs, managing employee relations and compliance, and supporting compensation and workforce planning. Revel has raised $180 million from leading investors to modernize software for ambitious hardware projects and is based in Marina del Rey, emphasizing a strong engineering culture.
Why It's Important?
This hiring decision signifies Revel's rapid growth and its commitment to establishing a robust internal infrastructure to support its expanding workforce. By bringing HR in-house, Revel aims to foster a more tailored and integrated approach to employee management, culture development, and compliance, particularly given its involvement in sensitive sectors like aerospace and defense, which often have stringent export-control requirements. An in-house HR function will allow for a deeper understanding of the company's unique needs and pace, enabling more effective talent management, retention, and the cultivation of a high-performance culture. This move is crucial for a fast-growing technical startup to maintain agility and ensure compliance while scaling operations.
What's Next?
The newly appointed HR Business Partner will lead the transition from the current outsourced HR provider, deciding which functions to internalize and which systems and vendors to utilize for HRIS, payroll, and benefits. Over time, this individual will develop core people programs, including onboarding, performance reviews, and career development, tailored for a fast-moving startup environment. They will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with California and multi-state employment laws, managing employee relations, and partnering with legal and security teams on export-control requirements. This role is expected to have significant influence on the company's growth, hiring strategies, and overall culture.
Beyond the Headlines
The decision to build an in-house HR function reflects a broader trend among rapidly scaling tech companies to internalize critical support functions as they mature. For Revel, operating in highly regulated and sensitive industries like aerospace and defense, an internal HR team can provide specialized expertise in areas such as ITAR compliance and other customer-driven requirements, which might be challenging for an external provider to manage with the same level of integration and understanding. This move also underscores the recognition that human capital is a strategic asset, and investing in a dedicated People function is essential for long-term success, innovation, and maintaining a competitive edge in attracting and retaining top talent in specialized technical fields.
