What's Happening?
APM Terminals Los Angeles has placed an order for 40 Orange EV HUSK-e XP battery-electric terminal tractors, marking a significant step towards full electrification of its on-dock rail drayage fleet at Pier
400. This order, part of a contract signed on June 16, 2026, will increase the terminal's electric fleet to 60 units. The initiative is partially funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Ports Program. The new tractors will build on the success of 20 units deployed since April 2025, which have logged 42,000 zero-emission hours and displaced over 40,700 diesel-equivalent gallons. The tractors are expected to be fully operational by January 2027.
Why It's Important?
This development is crucial for advancing environmental sustainability in the shipping and logistics industry. By transitioning to electric vehicles, APM Terminals is reducing its carbon footprint and setting a precedent for other terminals to follow. The move supports broader environmental goals and regulatory requirements aimed at reducing emissions in port operations. It also demonstrates the viability and reliability of electric vehicles in demanding industrial applications, potentially encouraging further adoption across the sector.
What's Next?
With the full deployment of the electric fleet expected by early 2027, APM Terminals will likely focus on optimizing operations and training staff to handle the new technology. The success of this initiative could lead to further investments in electrification and renewable energy solutions at other ports. Additionally, the performance data from Pier 400 may influence policy decisions and funding allocations for similar projects nationwide.
