A recent LinkedIn study reveals that while the broader job market presents difficulties for young workers, Millennials and Gen Z are increasingly securing high-paying positions in the artificial intelligence sector. The study, which analyzed LinkedIn's
platform data including gender, education, and age of hires, defines AI jobs as 'AI engineering and technology-building roles.' Gen Z workers account for over two-thirds of hires for in-demand individual contributor roles such as forward deployed engineer and AI engineer, with median annual salaries of $199,000 and $166,000, respectively. Millennials constitute 60% of new hires for head of AI roles, which offer a median pay of $236,000. This trend is notable given the current unemployment rate of 7.2% for workers aged 22 to 27 and 5.7% for recent college graduates in the same age group, compared to 4.1% for all workers, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of AI job postings on LinkedIn increased by 14% between 2023 and 2024, and then by 156% between 2024 and 2025.

Furthermore, the study points out a disparity in gender representation, with only 26% of new hires in AI roles being women in 2025, compared to 50% in non-AI occupations, indicating a potential for increased gender pay inequality in this rapidly expanding sector.
