What's Happening?
Ropes & Gray, a global law firm, has initiated the Roscoe Trimmier Scholarship Program, specifically designed for first-generation college students pursuing legal careers. This program aims to provide significant financial support and early professional
exposure to outstanding first-year law students who are the first in their families to graduate from college. Selected scholars who apply for, receive, and accept an offer for the firm's 2L summer associate program will be considered for a paid 1L summer position in the 2027 Summer Program and a corresponding scholarship award to help cover law school costs. The scholarship offers a total of $50,000 (pre-tax), mentorship from Ropes & Gray lawyers, and substantive learning opportunities to accelerate professional development. The firm emphasizes its commitment to performance, purpose, collaboration, and innovation, fostering an environment where teamwork drives success. The program seeks to identify candidates who embody grit, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to teamwork, qualities valued in future Ropes & Gray lawyers.
Why It's Important?
This scholarship program is important as it addresses a critical need for diversity and inclusion within the legal profession by supporting first-generation college students. By providing substantial financial aid and mentorship, Ropes & Gray is actively working to reduce barriers to entry for individuals who may not have traditional pathways into law. This initiative can significantly impact the careers of aspiring lawyers from underrepresented backgrounds, offering them a crucial head start and a supportive network within a top-tier law firm. The program's focus on early professional exposure and mentorship ensures that scholars gain practical experience and guidance, which are invaluable for navigating the complexities of a legal career. This commitment also signals to the broader legal industry the importance of investing in diverse talent, potentially encouraging other firms to implement similar programs and fostering a more equitable legal landscape.
What's Next?
The application window for Ropes & Gray's 2L Summer Associate Program, which includes the opportunity to apply for the Roscoe Trimmier Scholarship, opens on November 1st. The firm will review applications and conduct interviews on a rolling basis from November through January, with offers expected after first-semester grades are received. Applicants must have valid authorization to work in the U.S. after graduation. Selected scholars will receive a $25,000 (pre-tax) scholarship at the end of their 2L summer, with an additional $25,000 (pre-tax) scholarship upon starting as a full-time associate if they accept a full-time offer. The program also offers flexibility for 1L summer experiences, allowing students to choose between a four-week Foundations Program in a U.S. office or gaining experience outside a law firm setting, with both options providing a total of $50,000 (pre-tax) in payments.

By actively seeking out and nurturing first-generation college students, Ropes & Gray is not only diversifying its own workforce but also potentially influencing the future leadership of the legal profession. This program could foster a more inclusive legal community that better reflects the diverse society it serves, leading to a wider range of perspectives and approaches in legal practice and policy-making.
