What's Happening?
Valve has announced a new reservation system for preordering its Steam Machine, a gaming PC powered by SteamOS. The system is designed to make the preorder process fairer and less susceptible to exploitation by bots. Customers can sign up for a chance
to reserve one of four configurations, ranging from a 512GB model priced at $1,049 to a 2TB model with a Steam Controller priced at $1,428. The sign-up period ends on June 25th, after which Valve will use a one-time randomization to determine the reservation order. Those who secure a reservation will have 72 hours to complete their purchase once notified.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of a reservation system by Valve is significant as it addresses the ongoing issue of bots and scalpers in the tech industry, which often result in limited availability of popular products. By implementing this system, Valve aims to ensure that genuine customers have a fair chance to purchase the Steam Machine. This move could set a precedent for other companies facing similar challenges, potentially leading to broader changes in how preorders are managed across the industry. The pricing and availability of the Steam Machine also reflect current market conditions, including the impact of the memory crisis on component costs.
What's Next?
Following the closure of the sign-up period, Valve will notify customers of their reservation status on June 25th. Those who secure a reservation will be able to purchase their Steam Machine starting June 29th. Valve plans to continue processing reservations as units become available, with the goal of fulfilling all orders by the end of the year. Customers placed on the waitlist will have to wait for additional units to become available. The success of this reservation system could influence future product launches by Valve and other tech companies.
