What's Happening?
Australians in Film (AiF), in partnership with Screen Australia, has announced the five recipients of the 2026 UNTAPPED Development Lab. This international initiative aims to support emerging Australian screenwriters and directors in building creative
partnerships within the U.S. industry and developing a global network of collaborators. The selected participants are Becki Bouchier (Vic), Carly Brand (Vic), Leslie Hornung (WA), Joseph Meldrum (NSW), and Ellen Shanley (Qld). The program has been revamped for 2026, shifting from a project-specific development program to a broader professional development initiative. Its focus is now on equipping emerging Australian creatives with the knowledge, industry connections, and skills necessary to build sustainable screen careers. The lab's second stage will pair each recipient with a leading industry mentor and provide access to a curated program of sessions with Australian and international screen professionals. This includes dedicated pitch coaching, culminating in a Talent Showcase where participants will present their creative voices and career ambitions to industry professionals.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for the Australian screen industry's continued success, particularly in fostering global connections and talent. By providing emerging writers and directors with direct access to U.S. industry professionals and a global network, UNTAPPED helps bridge the geographical gap and facilitates international collaboration. This support is vital for Australian creatives to navigate the competitive global marketplace and secure opportunities beyond their domestic industry. The program's emphasis on professional development, mentorship, and practical skills like pitch coaching directly addresses the challenges faced by new talent trying to establish themselves on an international stage. The success of Australian talent in the U.S. market, as highlighted by recent breakout hits, underscores the importance of such programs in strengthening Australia's screen sector both at home and globally. This also benefits the U.S. industry by introducing fresh perspectives and diverse storytelling, potentially leading to new and innovative content.
What's Next?
The five selected recipients will proceed with the second stage of the UNTAPPED Development Lab. This stage involves being matched with a leading industry mentor and participating in a curated program of sessions with Australian and international screen professionals. A key component of this stage will be dedicated pitch coaching, designed to hone their presentation skills. The program will conclude with a Talent Showcase, where the participants will present themselves as artists, sharing their creative voices, the stories they aspire to tell, their experiences, and their career ambitions with leading industry professionals. This showcase is intended to facilitate further connections and potential collaborations within the global screen industry. The long-term goal is for these emerging creatives to leverage the insights and relationships gained to build sustainable global careers and contribute to the international screen landscape.
Beyond the Headlines
The UNTAPPED Development Lab represents a strategic investment in cultural exchange and the globalized nature of the entertainment industry. By actively fostering connections between Australian talent and the U.S. market, the program not only boosts individual careers but also enriches the diversity of storytelling available to international audiences. This initiative acknowledges that creative industries are increasingly interconnected, and success often hinges on cross-border collaboration and understanding different market dynamics. The focus on professional development and mentorship goes beyond immediate project funding, aiming to cultivate long-term career sustainability for these creatives. This approach could lead to a more integrated global film and television landscape, where talent and stories from various regions can more easily find international platforms and audiences, ultimately contributing to a richer and more varied global cultural output.
