What's Happening?
Engineers at the University of California San Diego have developed a smart ring capable of continuously monitoring up to four different chemical biomarkers from finger sweat. This innovative device, detailed in a study published in Nature Communications,
can track glucose, ketones, vitamin C, uric acid, lactate, and alcohol. The ring operates by passively drawing sweat through an osmotic hydrogel, which is then analyzed by an electrochemical sensor array. This allows for real-time health monitoring without the need for physical exertion. The ring is powered by a flexible zinc-silver oxide rechargeable battery, providing up to 12 hours of operation. The development was supported by the UC San Diego Center of Wearable Sensors and the National Science Foundation.
