What's Happening?
Urban mining, the process of recycling electronic waste, is proving to be a more efficient source of gold than traditional mining. A tonne of discarded mobile phones contains approximately 140 grams of gold, significantly more than the 5 to 20 grams typically
found in a tonne of mined gold ore. Despite the potential, only a small fraction of electronic waste is processed by formal recycling facilities, with much of it ending up in landfills or informal recovery operations. Companies like Umicore and Aurubis operate specialized facilities capable of extracting valuable metals from e-waste, but the scale of global electronic waste generation far exceeds current processing capacities.
