New research indicates that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is primarily transforming tasks and workflows within the workplace rather than leading to widespread job displacement. The study, titled 'Right-Sizing AI at Work,' was conducted by the Centre for Sociology
of Humans and Machines (SOHAM) at Trinity College Dublin and Technological University Dublin, and commissioned by Technology Ireland DIGITAL Skillnet. It highlights that AI is increasingly supporting workers across various occupations, requiring them to review, verify, coordinate, and exercise judgment over AI-supported outputs. Almost half of the surveyed workers reported regular use of AI tools, yet many view AI as a support tool rather than an essential component for completing their work. The findings suggest that competitive advantage in the AI era will come from how organizations integrate AI into jobs, workflows, and workforce development, emphasizing the importance of effective human-machine partnerships.
