What's Happening?
Actress Carrie-Anne Moss has confirmed that Marvel did not contact her to return as attorney Jeri Hogarth for the third and final season of Disney+'s 'Daredevil: Born Again'. Moss, who played the character across all three seasons of 'Jessica Jones' (2015-2019)
and also appeared in 'Daredevil', 'Iron Fist', and 'The Defenders' within the interconnected Netflix Marvel universe, will not be joining several of her former co-stars who are reprising their roles. Krysten Ritter is returning as Jessica Jones, while Mike Colter and Finn Jones are also set to reappear as Luke Cage and Danny Rand (Iron Fist), respectively. These actors will join Charlie Cox, who stars as Matt Murdock, and other familiar faces from the Marvel television universe. Marvel has not publicly provided a reason for Hogarth's absence from the returning cast.
Why It's Important?
The exclusion of Carrie-Anne Moss's character, Jeri Hogarth, from 'Daredevil: Born Again' is significant for fans of the original Netflix Marvel series. Hogarth was a prominent and complex character, particularly in 'Jessica Jones', representing a powerful and morally ambiguous figure within the legal landscape of the Marvel universe. Her absence could alter the narrative dynamics and connections to the broader Defenders saga that many viewers anticipated would be fully integrated into the new Disney+ series. While other key characters are returning, the decision not to include Hogarth might indicate a deliberate shift in storytelling focus or a streamlining of the narrative, potentially disappointing fans who hoped for a complete reunion of the original cast and storylines. This also highlights the selective nature of character reintegration as Marvel Studios continues to bring elements from previous iterations into the current Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What's Next?
The third and final season of 'Daredevil: Born Again' is anticipated to premiere on Disney+ in 2027. With several original Defenders actors confirmed to return, the series will likely focus on integrating these characters into the ongoing narrative alongside Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock. While Carrie-Anne Moss will not be reprising her role, she is currently starring in a new mystery series, 'Yaga', which premiered on AMC+ in the United States. Additionally, Moss is developing a new horror-thriller movie titled 'Claire' with former co-star Krysten Ritter, indicating continued collaboration between the actresses outside of the Marvel universe. The creative direction for 'Daredevil: Born Again' will likely become clearer as more details about the plot and character interactions are revealed closer to its release.
Beyond the Headlines
The decision to omit certain characters, like Jeri Hogarth, from the revival of the Marvel Netflix series on Disney+ raises questions about creative control and narrative continuity. It suggests that while Marvel Studios is keen to leverage the popularity of established characters, they may also be selectively curating which elements best fit their current overarching narrative vision for the MCU. This could lead to a more streamlined story, but it also risks alienating segments of the fanbase who valued the intricate character relationships and subplots from the original shows. The absence of a character like Hogarth, who represented a powerful, queer woman in a position of influence, might also be viewed through a lens of representation, prompting discussions about the diversity of characters being carried forward into new iterations of these beloved franchises.
