Nielsen is implementing significant enhancements to its data capturing process, particularly for co-viewing data, by integrating information from smart-watch-like gadgets. These Portable People Meter (PPM) Wearables, which Nielsen began deploying nationally
in 2016, are designed to be worn on the wrist and listen for audio from TV scenes, series, and films. This initiative aims to provide a more accurate understanding of viewership in an era where streaming has fragmented viewing habits. The company states that users of these devices will not need to go through the typical Nielsen log-in process. Additionally, Nielsen is adopting the Advertising Research Foundation’s (ARF) Device and Account Sharing (DASH) data, using updated DASH estimates based on recent survey data. They are also incorporating data from two new surveys to better estimate Spanish-speaking households within their panel and updating their machine learning tool to ensure demographic data is more representative and does not skew towards older residents.
