What's Happening?
Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) has completed initial ground tests of its hybrid-electric propulsion system, which is set to undergo flight testing in 2027. The system, developed in collaboration with Collins Aerospace and other partners, includes a new
thermal engine and a 1MW electric motor. This hybrid powertrain is designed to be 30% more efficient than standard turboprop engines. The testing took place in Longueuil, Quebec, and the system will be integrated onto a De Havilland Canada Dash 8-100 twin-turboprop for further trials. The project has received financial support from the Canadian and Quebec governments, and involves several partners including GKN Aerospace and the National Research Council Canada.
