What's Happening?
Governor Maura Healey has appointed real estate consultant Taidgh McClory as the newest member of the Massport board. McClory, who previously spent most of his career at CBRE, a commercial real estate brokerage,
and later founded THM Advisors, a consulting firm specializing in assembling diverse teams of real estate investors and contractors, will fill a position previously held by Warren Fields. His appointment comes as Massport chief executive Rich Davey sought a board member with extensive real estate experience. McClory's consulting work includes notable projects such as collaborating with Tishman Speyer and Breakthrough Properties on Harvard’s Enterprise Research Campus, where he helped secure $30 million in equity investments from Black and Latino investors. The ceremonial swearing-in was conducted by Governor Healey at the State House on August 31, with other board members and officials present.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of Taidgh McClory to the Massport board is significant due to his deep expertise in real estate, a critical component of Massport's operations and strategic development. Massport, as a port authority, manages vital infrastructure including airports and seaports, and its real estate holdings and development projects are central to its economic impact. McClory's experience, particularly his work in fostering diverse investment and contractor teams, aligns with the 'Massport Model' which emphasizes economic development and inclusion. His presence on the board is expected to strengthen decision-making related to real estate, ensuring that the authority's projects are not only economically sound but also contribute to broader community benefits and equitable access to opportunities. This move underscores the administration's focus on leveraging private sector expertise for public sector governance and promoting inclusive economic growth within state-managed entities.
What's Next?
McClory will join the Massport board for its upcoming meetings, where he is expected to contribute his real estate insights to ongoing and future projects. His role will involve learning more about the aviation and maritime trade aspects of the state's economy, while applying his specialized knowledge to Massport's real estate ventures. The board's focus will likely continue to be on strategic development, infrastructure improvements, and ensuring that Massport's operations contribute positively to the state's economy and communities. McClory's appointment may also signal a continued emphasis on the 'Massport Model' of inclusive development, potentially influencing how future projects are structured to ensure broader participation from diverse investors and contractors. His contributions will be closely watched as Massport navigates complex development challenges and opportunities.
Beyond the Headlines
McClory's appointment highlights a growing trend in public sector governance: the integration of specialized private sector expertise to address complex challenges. His background in fostering diverse investment teams for large-scale real estate projects suggests a commitment to equity and inclusion that extends beyond mere compliance, aiming for tangible economic opportunities for underrepresented groups. This approach could serve as a model for other public authorities seeking to maximize the social and economic impact of their development initiatives. The 'Massport Model' itself, which encourages diverse participation, reflects a broader societal shift towards demanding that economic development be not only profitable but also equitable. McClory's role will be crucial in demonstrating how these principles can be effectively implemented within a major public authority, potentially influencing best practices for public-private partnerships and inclusive growth strategies nationwide.
