What's Happening?
Dodge, owned by Stellantis, has announced its return as a manufacturer in the NASCAR Cup Series, partnering with Kaulig Racing, starting in the 2027 season. This marks Dodge's first full-time presence as a NASCAR manufacturer since 2012. The announcement
was made by Tim Kuniskis, head of American Brands, SRT Performance, and Direct Connection division at Stellantis North America, during the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Event in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Monday, November 2. Kaulig Racing, which has previously fielded Chevrolet entries since its inception in 2016, will now be aligned with Dodge. The organization is expected to reveal its 2027 driver lineup during the upcoming championship festivities at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Additionally, Dodge plans to unveil the Charger livery for the 2027 Cup season at The Dodge Sno-Brawl event on December 4, 2026, during the 59th annual Snowball Derby in Pensacola, Florida. This return follows Stellantis's re-entry into NASCAR this season through its RAM 1500 entries in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with Kaulig Racing.
Why It's Important?
Dodge's re-entry into the NASCAR Cup Series is a significant development for the sport, bringing a third major manufacturer back into competition alongside existing brands. This move is expected to intensify competition on the track, potentially leading to more exciting races and increased fan engagement. For Kaulig Racing, this partnership provides substantial stability and support, allowing the team to build a long-term winning program. NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell highlighted that this commitment underscores Dodge's belief in the sport's ability to showcase top brands, generating excitement among fans. The return of a prominent automotive brand like Dodge could also attract new sponsors and investment into NASCAR, bolstering its commercial appeal and overall health. Historically, Dodge has a strong legacy in NASCAR, holding the fourth-most victories and third-most poles in the Cup Series, with its last championship won in 2012 by Brad Keselowski.
What's Next?
Following the announcement, Kaulig Racing is set to reveal its 2027 driver lineup during the upcoming championship weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. This will be a key step in shaping the team's future competitive strategy. On December 4, 2026, Dodge will host 'The Dodge Sno-Brawl' event, where the Charger livery for the 2027 Cup season will be unveiled. This event will likely generate significant media attention and further build anticipation for Dodge's return. The 2027 NASCAR Cup Series season is scheduled to begin with the Wheatly Vodka Clash at Daytona International Speedway on February 13, followed by the 69th running of the Daytona 500 on February 21, which will mark Dodge's official competitive return. The partnership will involve extensive development and testing of the new Dodge race cars to ensure they are competitive from the outset, with both Dodge and Kaulig Racing aiming for immediate success.
Beyond the Headlines
Dodge's return to NASCAR signifies a broader trend of automotive manufacturers recognizing the value of motorsports as a platform for brand promotion and technological development. This move could encourage other manufacturers to consider entering or re-entering the sport, potentially leading to a more diverse and competitive landscape in NASCAR. The partnership with Kaulig Racing, a relatively newer team compared to established powerhouses, also highlights a strategic shift, potentially offering opportunities for emerging teams to secure major manufacturer backing. From a technological standpoint, NASCAR's Next Gen car platform may have played a role in attracting Dodge back, as it offers a more relevant testing ground for production car technologies. This re-engagement could also influence consumer perceptions of Dodge vehicles, associating them with performance and durability demonstrated on the racetrack. The long-term implications could include increased innovation in racing technology and a revitalized interest in NASCAR from both traditional and new fan bases.
