What's Happening?
Israeli food tech startup Meala has significantly expanded its production capacity for texturizing pea proteins, now operating at full scale across two sites in France and Germany. This expansion has more than tripled its output, enabling the company
to produce enough pea protein to replace 1,400 tonnes of eggs annually, equivalent to 82,000 eggs per day, starting next year. Meala's pea proteins are designed to serve as functional plant-based alternatives to eggs and other texture additives, offering binding, gelling, foaming, and emulsifying properties for various food applications, including baked goods and plant-based meat alternatives. The company is also in the process of filing a Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) notice with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its pea protein ingredient, having already secured a self-affirmed GRAS determination for its intended food uses in the U.S.
Why It's Important?
Meala's expansion and its move to secure FDA approval are significant for the U.S. food industry and consumers. The availability of a stable, plant-based egg alternative can help food manufacturers de-risk their supply chains, which have been vulnerable to disruptions from issues like avian flu, leading to price volatility and shortages. By offering a cost-effective and environmentally superior ingredient—generating 63% lower carbon emissions and using 96% less water than egg powder—Meala contributes to more sustainable food production. For consumers, these innovations mean access to plant-based products with improved texture and nutritional value, often with shorter ingredient lists, aligning with growing demand for cleaner labels and healthier options. The FDA's GRAS affirmation will pave the way for broader adoption of Meala's ingredients in the U.S. market, potentially transforming how plant-based foods are formulated and produced.
What's Next?
Meala's immediate next step is the formal filing of its GRAS notice with the U.S. FDA, which will solidify its regulatory standing for widespread use in the American food market. This regulatory clarity is crucial for attracting more U.S. food manufacturers to adopt Meala's pea proteins. The company is also actively pursuing its Series A funding round, having already raised approximately $10 million, which will further support its growth and market penetration. As production scales up, Meala anticipates increased commercial demand from food manufacturers seeking stable, functional, and sustainable ingredient solutions. The company's focus will likely be on expanding its partnerships and distribution networks within the U.S., building on its existing collaborations in Europe, to integrate its pea proteins into a wider range of food products.
Beyond the Headlines
The rise of companies like Meala underscores a fundamental shift in the global food system towards sustainable and plant-based alternatives. This development is not just about replacing eggs; it represents a broader movement to innovate food ingredients that address environmental concerns, supply chain vulnerabilities, and evolving consumer preferences for healthier, less processed foods. The emphasis on 'clean labels' and reduced carbon footprints reflects a growing ethical and ecological consciousness within the food industry. As more plant-based ingredients gain regulatory approval and market acceptance, they could significantly reduce reliance on animal agriculture, leading to profound impacts on land use, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. This trend also highlights the increasing role of food technology in creating novel solutions that balance taste, nutrition, and sustainability, shaping the future of what and how we eat.
