What's Happening?
Change the Beat, a global music non-profit founded by Sydney Blu, recently made its London debut at fabric, a prominent venue. The 12-hour event on October 15 brought together over 40 artists, music professionals, and organizations. The initiative focused
on enhancing access and representation for women and gender-expansive artists within the electronic music scene. The event featured industry panels discussing career building in electronic music, a 'Women Who Shaped Electronic Music' photo exhibition, and a club night. The exhibition recognized 18 influential women in the genre, including ANNA, Annie Mac, and Honey Dijon, highlighting their contributions across DJing, production, radio, live events, and club culture over several decades. The panels covered practical aspects such as securing bookings in London, understanding A-list dance label contracts, and the role of management and agency representation. Proceeds from the club night will support Change the Beat’s international artist development program, which offers education, mentorship, and career support.
Why It's Important?
This event is significant for the electronic dance music (EDM) industry, particularly in its efforts to foster diversity and inclusion. By providing a platform for emerging women and gender-expansive artists, Change the Beat addresses long-standing issues of underrepresentation in a male-dominated field. The focus on practical career development, through panels and networking opportunities, directly empowers artists to navigate the complexities of the music business. The 'Women Who Shaped Electronic Music' exhibition serves as a crucial historical acknowledgment, celebrating the often-overlooked contributions of women to the genre's evolution. This initiative not only aims to create a more equitable industry but also enriches the artistic landscape by promoting a wider range of voices and perspectives. The organization's pledge to help 300 artists secure label opportunities by 2028 demonstrates a tangible commitment to measurable impact, potentially shifting industry demographics and artistic output.
What's Next?
Following its successful London debut, Change the Beat plans further international dates in the coming year, continuing its mission to support women and gender-expansive artists globally. The organization will proceed with its artist development program, offering education, mentorship, and career support. It will also continue working towards its goal of helping 300 artists secure label opportunities by 2028. The London event demonstrated how combining industry conferences, historical exhibitions, and live music events can effectively connect conversations about representation and artist development with the music itself. Future events are expected to build on this model, providing direct access for its community to professionals across various areas of the music business. Sydney Blu has confirmed that plans for 2027 are already underway, indicating a sustained effort to expand the initiative's reach and impact.
Beyond the Headlines
The work of Change the Beat extends beyond immediate career development, touching upon deeper cultural and ethical dimensions within the music industry. By actively promoting women and gender-expansive artists, the organization challenges entrenched biases and stereotypes that have historically limited opportunities for these groups. This initiative contributes to a broader cultural shift towards greater inclusivity and equity, not just in EDM, but potentially across the wider entertainment sector. The emphasis on education and mentorship fosters a supportive ecosystem, moving beyond tokenism to create sustainable career pathways. Furthermore, by highlighting the historical contributions of women in electronic music, Change the Beat helps to rewrite narratives and ensure that the full spectrum of artistic influence is recognized. This long-term impact could lead to a more diverse and innovative music landscape, reflecting a wider range of experiences and creative expressions.
