What's Happening?
A report from the Blackbaud Institute highlights significant gaps in the effectiveness and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) within the nonprofit sector. The report, titled 'Bridging the Effectiveness Gap,' reveals that only a small fraction
of organizations have moved beyond experimental AI use, with about 10% achieving substantial benefits. The majority, approximately 75%, use AI in fragmented ways, limiting its impact. The report identifies two major gaps: the Data-Readiness Gap, where less than 20% of organizations rate their data health as excellent, and the Transparency Gap, where 76% of donors expect clear AI usage disclosure, but only 26% of organizations currently provide it. The findings are based on surveys conducted with 1,389 social impact professionals and 1,034 donors in the U.S.
Why It's Important?
The report underscores the potential of AI to transform the nonprofit sector by improving revenue, donor retention, and staff productivity. However, the identified gaps highlight a mismatch between donor expectations and organizational practices, which could affect donor trust and funding. Organizations that address these gaps and treat AI as a governed framework for growth are seeing significant benefits. The findings suggest that improving data readiness and transparency could unlock AI's full potential, leading to more efficient operations and better outcomes for social impact organizations.
What's Next?
To bridge the identified gaps, nonprofits may need to invest in improving their data infrastructure and establish clear guidelines for AI transparency. This could involve training staff to better understand and utilize AI tools, as well as implementing policies that ensure donor expectations are met. As AI technology continues to evolve, organizations that adapt and integrate these practices may gain a competitive edge in attracting donors and achieving their missions.
