Qingdao, China, is increasingly recognizing industrial design as a 'second core technology' crucial for transforming and upgrading its manufacturing sector. Historically, industrial design was viewed as a superficial 'dressing up' of products, involved
only at the final stages of research and development to enhance aesthetics. However, this perception is shifting dramatically. According to Pan Ping, director of the industrial policy division at the Qingdao municipal bureau of industry and information technology, industrial design is now integrated from the initial stages, focusing on user pain points to define product functions and drive technological innovation. This approach moves manufacturing from a 'we make what we have' mentality to 'we create what users need,' as stated by Wu Jian, general manager of Haier's innovation design center. This strategic pivot aims to address bottlenecks in the industry and transform products from single-function carriers into comprehensive experiences that blend technology, aesthetics, culture, and sustainability.
